Are you struggling with keeping on track to achieving your goals? In this episode, Cara discusses her five-step goal process and how it keeps goals exciting.
Everyone has a goal they want to achieve. For some it’s getting down to a specific weight or paying off a large debt. There are steps in setting realistic goals, but many struggle due to perfectionism. Many people feel if they mess up in achieving their goals, they should just quit. Take trying to shed a few pounds. Some women feel if they have a cheat day, everything is gone to waste and they should just stop working out. The point is perfection is not real and mistakes make us human. As long as you are actively making strides towards your goals, you are on the right track.
Cara talks about her 5 step process for staying focused on a long term health goal, which can be applied to other goals. One of the steps is vision. Think about these questions: Where do you want to end up? What is at the end of the tunnel? This is something you need to determine so you have a starting point. You can’t accomplish something if you don’t know what it is you are trying to accomplish. For weight loss, it can be aiming to lose “x” number of pounds. At that point, you work on how to lose that amount. What habits do you need to change to make your goal? What plan do you need to create for yourself?
You also need to set a baseline for your goals, which includes determining a plan that works for you. Ask yourself: Where are you at right now so you can make appropriate goals? If you want to drink more water each day, think about the amount you currently drink. Then you can increase it to an amount that is realistic. For example, if you want to drink 8 glasses a day but you currently drink 2, start with one extra glass every 3 days. That way you are slowly moving towards your goal.
It is important to reward yourself when you do good. Cara emphasizes the need to give yourself micro and macro rewards when you achieve something along the process. Using her weight loss journey as an example, she explains that losing one pound each week leads to $10 being put towards an expensive piece of furniture. Connecting your goals with things that bring you joy is a great way to achieve them. Rewarding yourself provides more motivation and they can be as small or as big as you want.
Wherever you are in your journey to completing your goals, be proud of yourself!
