Do you struggle with effectively working from home? In this podcast episode, host Cara Harvey shares her mission to help work-at-home moms manage their home, work on personal goals, and grow an online business without feeling overwhelmed.
It can be tough to stay focused when working from home. Many moms juggle taking care of the kids, staying on top of household duties and working a 9-5 or running a business. It takes a lot of organizing and planning ahead to help get everything done. Cara shares some tips moms can use while working at home. One tip is to create a schedule that allows for flexibility. This can include time blocking or planning ahead to ensure everything gets done. It is crucial to focus on creating a schedule that works for you and your family.
If you decide to time block, which involves putting a chuck of work blocks into your calendar to focus on specific tasks, it is important to communicate those blocks with those around you. Let your partner, family and friends know about them so they can support you in ways that work. Another tip Cara shares is to block time to do nothing. It is important to have time in the day to truly relax and do what you want. This could be catching up on your reading or favourite tv show. This will allow you to decompress and mentally get ready for your other tasks.
Cara shares how using the minute microwave technique can help with multitasking. Making a coffee can take a couple of minutes. For many it can take one minute using a high tech machine. In that minute, you can complete another task such as taking the trash out or putting a load of dishes away. This allows you to cross something off your list.
When working from home, you need to create boundaries with technology. For example, if you are in a meeting, charge your phone in another room so you are not tempted to glance at it. Another example is responding to calls or texts during a designated period. This can be your lunch or bathroom breaks.
