How to Get Things Back on Track

A Purpose Driven Mom Podcast

Episode 375

Do you fall behind on completing tasks when life doesn’t go as planned? In this podcast episode, Cara shares and discusses the importance of proactive and reactive strategies to get back on track when life throws off your schedule.

A Flexible Schedule

Cara talks about scheduling and the importance of planning a flexible schedule. Everyday is not going to look the same. Think about the common things that throw a day off like a sick co-worker or a call from the school telling you your child is sick. Plan for those days in advance. It is easier for you to jump right in if these unplanned circumstances come up. Cara uses an example of planning for a visit from your kids while being in school. If the kids are older, you can plan some time to sneak off and get some coursework done for an hour or two. Cara calls this proactive planning.

Reactive Planning

Cara goes over reactive planning as well. This is planning for something that has already happened. An example is making a list of all the things you are behind on. Focus on the things that are urgent. What is due tomorrow? What needs research? What is due next week that I can do later on? You can even categorize your tasks and highlight what item under each category is urgent. There might be some important tasks that you need to focus on, like coursework which means you can’t get to other tasks, like household chores. Delegate those chores to other people in the house that way you have support.

Cara emphasizes to never skip weekly planning. Your laundry list of tasks will get longer and longer if you don’t spend time each week going over the list and crossing things off and adding new ones.
