with Cara Harvey
Are you looking for a way to feel supported in accomplishing your goals? In this episode of The Purpose Driven Mom Show, host Cara Harvey discusses the benefits of online coworking for work-at-home moms. She highlights the challenges of balancing work and family, especially during summer when kids are home.
Working from home can cause issues with productivity, especially if you are easily distracted or feel unmotivated. Cara shares the benefits of co-working with others to help with balancing work and personal tasks. Co-working exists in a virtual space, where busy moms work in real time. With check-ins and goal periods, Cara encourages moms to create their own 15 minute time blocks where they spend the session working on multiple things while getting motivation from other members.
Coworking can be very beneficial for busy moms. It fits those who have flexible working schedules or days where there is an hour or two to sit down and participate. Coworking also fosters collaboration and knowledge sharing with members who might feel like they don’t know where to start when tackling a list of tasks or need some additional motivation to complete their goals.

Cara Harvey 00:00:03 Welcome to the Purpose Driven Moms show here at A Purpose Driven Mom, we believe that it’s possible to manage your home, work on your personal goals, and grow and scale an online business. Most productivity tips out there tell you to hustle more and make you feel shame about not being motivated enough. And we’re here to dispel this myth. I’m Kara Harvey, and I am on a mission to help work at home. Moms realize that they have the power to go after their dreams, take care of themselves, and manage their home without perfectionism, guilt, or having to sacrifice their sleep. If you’re ready to shift your thinking around productivity and get some practical tips to help you manage your mom life. Toss your earbuds in while you fold the laundry. And let’s do this! Welcome to the purpose of our Moms Show episode 466. On this gloomy, rainy day, this is my my rainy day wardrobe over here with the hat very dark. So hopefully the lights, if you’re watching on YouTube, are shining enough for all of us.
Cara Harvey 00:00:58 And if you’re listening on the podcast, I am so happy you’re here. You might be able to hear the torrential downpour that is happening outside my office. But it doesn’t stop me because perfectionism doesn’t live here at the Purpose Driven Moms show. If you’ve never tuned in, I’m Kara Harvey and I help work at home. Moms find time for themselves, their goals without burnout and shame. And today, I’m going to give you a tip that we have found in my program. The Purpose Driven Mom Club over the past few months has taken the productivity of the moms and skyrocketed it. And it’s online coworking and why it might be your secret to success, not only in the summer, but beyond. It can feel so lonely being home. Working from home. You get distracted, unmotivated. I’m not even going to lie. Just now my husband decided to work from home today. And while I’m recording this, if you’ve been listening to episodes, I’m batching out my summer so that I can take my summer light.
Cara Harvey 00:01:45 It’s a strategy I teach in my program and I was so unmotivated. I was like, I don’t want to do it. Because here’s the thing I tell people I am a very driven person. I’m just not always motivated. I’m telling you, it’s rainy. I was as soon as I got in the car to take my kids to school this morning. I was like, ooh, a nap sounds great. Like I just wasn’t there. And I use my strategies. I actually talked to my husband for a bit. I opened up Voxer, which is a walkie talkie app with one of my work besties, and I started to talk it out because we feel unmotivated often. And for us moms, it can be really hard and challenging to be the one to be like, let’s do it. Let’s push. Now we do it for everybody else, but we don’t always do it for us. So I’m going to talk to you about the strategy of online co-working. You can use it for in person as well.
Cara Harvey 00:02:29 Why it works and why? It’s probably that key lever you’re missing. This is something we have started to offer in the Purpose Driven Mom Club. Because I heard from moms a lot. Like, we’re making our plan. They’re learning the methods, they’re doing the thing. They’re having the mindset changes. They’re achieving things. We have people who stay in our membership for years because they know it is helping them. The one thing they say to me is, I wish you could just be in my house. I wish you could be in my house, follow me around and make me do something. And I was like, well, I can’t, but maybe I can. And so this year, we added online co-working sessions to our coaching and the Purpose Driven Mom Club. The first ever Mom club is a group coaching program and a membership that you can join. We have 200 members and from all over the world, moms that want to work on their own goals, moms that want to work on their business, moms that just want time for their own things.
Cara Harvey 00:03:14 And we have coaching calls almost every single day. So we’ve got calls Monday, two on Tuesday, one on Wednesday and one on Friday. All different time zones for our members from around the world. We have now added in a rotation of coworking, so once a week it rotates through the different, you know, on week one of the month it might be Mondays call. Then on week two of the month it’s Tuesday morning, then week three, Tuesday afternoon, then Wednesday on Thursday, and then Friday. That’s what we call soar. That’s where I teach for about 15 20 minutes. Something like this, a live podcast, if you will. You might hear some of those on this show sometimes. And then I do open coaching. Coworking has helped so many because it is a structured time where I’m literally not literally figuratively in your home. And I’m saying we have 15 minutes, pick the one task and I make you make it micro, not this big task. Do it and we’re going to check in.
Cara Harvey 00:04:05 And it’s been a game changer. So I’m going to teach you about how to do this strategy today and why I think it could work for you because it is hard. There are a lot of interruptions in our day. It’s the summer. Kids are home. They’re wanting your attention. Even today, it’s not summer officially. Yeah, it’s when I’m recording. But my husband’s working from home. I’m so distracted. I already went in. The room was like, sitting next to him. I’m like, what’s up? Like, you know, there’s just so many interruptions and distractions. Take a quick second. I want to invite you to join one of my new favorite apps. It’s called Brand Club. I am all about trying to get my side hustle on right. And one of the things I hate doing is taking money out of my pre-planned budget for tiny things that pop up, like the snack stand during football season, or the $10 you have to Venmo somewhere else because you need it for school.
Cara Harvey 00:04:48 And I found Brand Club to literally fill that gap for me. Here’s what I do with it. Every single day I go in, I earn between a dollar and $1.50. It takes me two minutes and I just fill in some surveys. Super simple. Very easy. I also will link it to my Amazon, my Walmart and my target account so when I buy things anyway, I get cash back. Takes me about ten days, but I earn $10. And when I get my $10, I cash it to my Venmo girl math. I’m using it all the places I want to share with you a $3 code to get started, because you need $10 to cash out. So let me give you $3. I’ll get $3 if you sign up. I really appreciate it. Go to a purpose driven romcom club, do it on your phone because it’s going to bring you up to the app so you can download it. It’s a really easy way to just get some side money going, so you don’t have to take it out of your regular budget and make some money for yourself.
Cara Harvey 00:05:30 That’s a purpose driven romcom club. There’s also a lack of accountability for us moms. We hold everyone else accountable, but it is rare that someone holds us accountable. So it’s challenging for us to say, I have this goal, I want to do this thing. That’s why we have accountability calls in the club, what those calls look like, they’re different from co-working. You get on and we go through a structure. You share your win of the week, what you’re working on, any struggles you’re having or places you need coaching or help. And then we make a plan for next week and you get individual coaching, and we do those again for three out of five calls a week are look look like that. Right. Because we don’t have that accountability. It’s hard for people to get things done. And I noticed it’s a lot in my membership. The moms that get on or like Kara, I said I was going to go and declutter my bathroom and I wasn’t going to do it, but I knew I was getting on a call with you today, so I just did it five minutes ago.
Cara Harvey 00:06:27 I don’t care when you do it right, it’s that extra accountability. And it also was hard because sometimes we feel like we’re doing things alone. We’re on that hamster wheel and we keep doing things alone. Right? There’s no boss. There’s no place to clock in. There’s no pressure to start something in particular with our personal goals. A lot of times us moms will get things done when it comes to our to do list, right? My daughter, she’s doing a wax museum. I dunno if you’ve seen this at school where they dress up as a character and then they have a one minute spiel. The entire third grade stays in the cafeteria, parents can come in and they like stand in. If you’re watching on YouTube, you can see me like if they freeze and then someone taps them and then they unfreeze, right, like a wiggle character, and then they do their history of the person and then they freeze and whatever. So my daughter, of course, has picked Alexander Hamilton. If you don’t know this about our home, we are Hamilton fans, right? I’m trying to think of the word that stands.
Cara Harvey 00:07:17 Is that what the kids use these days? I don’t talk about the fans. We we vibe with Hamilton, if you will. My daughter was learning about the Revolutionary War this year and I thought, and she liked wicked a lot. So I was like, maybe she’ll like musicals, let’s do Hamilton obsessed. Now, obviously there’s a lot of teachable moments in Hamilton. A lot of times we have to pause, talk about the language and the content, but it’s brought so many rich discussions. So my sister, just my sister, my daughter, my sister is also obsessed with Hamilton. So she loves this. But my daughter loves Hamilton, so she picked Hamilton. So I have to get her a Hamilton costume now. I couldn’t find one on the marketplace, so I’m gonna go thrift and I’m gonna try to find a couple pieces to put together a full costume. Just some khaki pants and like, a button down shirt or something like that. I’ll find her a vest. Cool. I’ll do that for her.
Cara Harvey 00:07:57 I’ll do it on a time crunch. We’ll make it work. But when I said, oh, I really wanted to weed and maintenance my garden, I really want to get that workout in. It’s so much easier to not do it for ourselves, right? But not for our kids. The thing is, we don’t want to keep pushing our goals off, right? It’s going to lead us to inconsistent progress. Feeling defeated, burnout, resentment, guilt when we’re not being as productive. So you need a tool. And everything I teach in the purpose of a mom club. It’s a tool, right? It’s a tool. And it’s a strategy that you can use to enhance what you’re doing. So we added this tool to the membership that you can actually come in and preview. I’ll talk about that in a little bit. But we’ve added this tool to the membership to help people specifically with this. I need the push. I need the kick in the butt. I can make the plan like I’ve gotten to them to the point where they can make the plan, but they’re struggling with the follow through.
Cara Harvey 00:08:47 This helps the follow through. Okay, so our online coworking is a it’s a virtual space. Okay. You can do these in real life, but because of scheduling, because of distance, because of things like that, because of our kids, it can be really hard to do these things in real life with people. But if we do them over zoom or on FaceTime. They really work. So we do ours on zoom, and it is a virtual space where people work in real time. Okay, this is the way that we structure it. You can structure yours however you want. So again, you don’t have to come do ours. We highly recommend it because we are trained and know what we’re doing and we’re really going to help you. But you know you can do it with a couple friends. Though I will say every time I have a friend as an accountability buddy, it rarely works out. I have one friend that it’s worked out with because we don’t tough love each other enough. We don’t challenge each other enough like a coach like I would do with you.
Cara Harvey 00:09:31 I have no personal investment in your goals. I have personal investment in your achievement. So I’m going to challenge you. I’m going to push you. I’m not going to care if you get mad at me, if I say, hey, wait a minute. We need to make a different plan or this sounds like you’re putting too much or not enough on your plate. If you get mad at me for my honest opinion. Right. That’s like okay with me. So coaches, I think challenge you a little bit, but you can do it with friends. Whatever. It’s fine. So you have a check in or a goal period. You can have it be silent or with music and then you wrap up. So this is how we run ours. When we start it, we actually mute everyone. At first I was playing music and normally we record our calls and they all go inside of a member portal so people can listen, because I think there’s a lot of benefit in listening to people be coached.
Cara Harvey 00:10:13 And then you could go back and listen to yourself be coached. So while you’re being coached, you don’t have to take notes. You can go back. We don’t record these because they would be really boring. And the other thing is because we’re not recording, we could play music because then the internet’s not like this is copyrighted music. We started that, and then we got some feedback that people would prefer if I didn’t play music. And Courtney, our other coaches, didn’t play music. We had it muted there so that they can play their own music so that they can take a course, they can listen to a book, they can do their own thing and focus. So we are completely muted once we get started to kick off. I always have everyone set their intention for the first 15 minutes. Now it’s not a full hour of one thing. My method is 15 minute chunks. So this is a 15 minutes of one task and I have them put in the chat what they’re working on, and I will challenge them if it’s too big.
Cara Harvey 00:10:59 Right. I’ll say, oh, you’re going, you want to get this one email written? Perfect. I’m going to write my entire welcome sequence. Nope. Too big. Pick one thing you’re going to work on. And that challenge really helps people because it’s forcing them, you know, to kind of like shrink down what they’re working on. So they’re even more laser focused. We put a 15 minute timer on, we use the timer app on zoom so that you can see how much time is left. I mute myself and everyone else does. Now, I do offer coaching during this time, which is where I just tell people I’m not looking at my screen. I’m on zoom, I’m looking at my screen. So if you need me, just unmute and say, hey Cara, I have a question and then I’ll come off. And I still coach. During that time period, which yesterday we had a co-working, I was able to coach someone through something they were struggling with in real time.
Cara Harvey 00:11:43 It’s like you’re working on the goal, you hit the roadblock and I’ll help you in real time, which is awesome. Sometimes, though, nobody has a question for one of the 15 minute chunks. So I also love it because I’ll get some work done. What do people typically work on? Anything they want. Yesterday, for example, on our Tuesday group, someone was working on their weekly schedule. Someone was actually running errands, and they were like, I just don’t feel like doing this. So I’m going to take you in the car on my phone with me. So we hung out while they ran errands. Someone was doing laundry. They were shredding papers, working on images for their podcast. Right? It’s really all the things that you’re like, I really want to do this, but I don’t feel motivated and I need help. Ding ding ding. Let’s do it right at the end of 15 minutes, I unmute myself again. I have everyone, put in the chat. What have you been working on? What did you get accomplished? So now what you’re also getting is this dopamine hit of like, success.
Cara Harvey 00:12:29 I did the thing I’ve been saying. I want to do the thing, and now I did the thing. And I’m really pleased with the fact that I did the thing. Then we reassess what people often find is in that one 15 minute block, they either get much more done than they thought, right? They finish their effort. That happened. So in we did four 15 minute blocks yesterday, right in the one block I got more done than I thought. In another block I didn’t have enough time and in another block I was racing the clock. So let’s talk about those. If you are a mom who wants to start a business and you need help, and you want to go from chaos to clarity, I want you to go over to a purpose driven planner and get my new ultimate Digital planner for business owners. I’ve got client profile pages, business breakdowns, promo planners, goal setting, social media, and more. You can take that overwhelm that is planning your business and get all of it in one place.
Cara Harvey 00:13:21 You can make a binder, get your things together, and get on track with your business. I’ve got 13 different planning worksheets you can choose from goal setting sheets, project planning, product planning, client profiles, financial templates, and more. Go to a Supermom Planner and you can also get this bonus social media content pages, where there are over 20 different options for you to lay out your social media and get it done. Go to a Purpose Driven Planner and grab yours today. One you will find that you’ll get more done than you think. And what this does is it does. That mental game of things don’t have to take as long as we think right? We think they’re going to take forever. So we don’t want to get started. But I just proved to myself that folding this load of laundry and putting it away took less than 15 minutes. So now I have that information I can store in my brain the next time it’s time to do laundry. Hey, remember last time it took me seven minutes, right? So you know that and you can rationalize with yourself sometimes in another block.
Cara Harvey 00:14:21 I didn’t get my things done because I didn’t break my goal down small enough. So that’s another takeaway. You might be like, oh wait, I’m setting myself up for failure because I’m not giving myself enough time. I’m saying, oh, I want to get this email written, but I actually could use two 15 minute time blocks. So it really helps you kind of make this inventory. The other thing it does is it has you play the beat the clock game. The reason my 15 minute method is mixed with a timer is because it becomes a gamification of your goals. I want to beat the clock, so I actually work a little bit faster right there is that principle, Pareto principle. Right. That like the task will expand to the time you give it. So thinking about that principle is, hey, I said I was going to fold my laundry. I could take a half hour or I could get it done in eight minutes. Right. Beating the clock allows me to take those tasks that I’m procrastinating on.
Cara Harvey 00:15:10 On. Like belaboring. It’s like pulling teeth to get there and actually get them done. We rinse and repeat that for about 15 minutes. It’s focused execution, right? Think about this like a virtual office with built in accountability. One of the reasons I think we also like the way that we do it at the purpose for Mom club is it always rotates. So because we have calls at different times of the day, based on your time zone, you could hop on one or you can hop on all. And this is one of the things that the club members love. They get unlimited calls, right? I’m going to talk to you in a second about the thing called Club Pass, which is a brand new thing we have here for the Purpose Driven Mom Club that we’re working on this summer. Well, with Club Pass, you get one call at a time with your $79 membership into the club. You get all the calls, right? So you can show up every day based on your schedule.
Cara Harvey 00:15:53 Again, that one mom yesterday was like, oh, I gotta go run errands. This is a good time for me to do that. Well, maybe at the Tuesday night call. I actually want to work on my planning for tomorrow so you can actually trade in based on what you need. It works because it’s built in accountability. If you say you’re going to do something and you’re not the only one holding yourself to it, you’re more likely to actually follow through. When someone else is expecting you to get something done, when you say to them, I’m going to get this done, you’re not only building up your confidence, but you’re starting to build that momentum. You’re getting some action. It is perfect for those tasks that you tend to avoid. Email. Okay. How many of us are like, I’m going to go through my email. I’m going to say this 15 minutes, I’m going to get it done. And it’s not I’m going to spend an hour on my email. It’s we have four 15 minute blocks in our hour that we do at the purpose of Vermont Club.
Cara Harvey 00:16:41 You make yours as long as you want. My goal is to spend 15 minutes on an administrative task, like my email, 15 minutes on a business task, 15 minutes on a personal task. And that last 15 minutes is buffer for what I feel like doing. This way I’m working on multiple things and I’m getting them done. Or you could say this if again, if you’re a club member and you show up multiple times Tuesdays, 10 a.m. one this week is all business. Next week is all personal. You can customize it however you want, but it helps because you’re saying you’re going to do something and you’re showing up and you’re not the only one holding your hand through it. I teach a time blocking method. You’ve probably heard me talk about it multiple times, and it works right. But this is like time blocking with boundaries. The other reason this is really helpful, especially for us moms, and especially in the summer when everybody’s home. Is this protected time on your calendar for you? I was talking to one of the club members a couple weeks ago, and she was saying that like when she says she’s getting on a meeting, even if it’s a co-working meeting in the club, nobody bothers her, right? Because they know she’s on a meeting.
Cara Harvey 00:17:37 It’s the same. It helps you say no to the distractions, showing up like you would for an appointment. Not just for you, but for the other people. Hey, mommy has a call at 1:00 today. So at 1:00 today, this is what you’re going to work on? I’m going to be in the office working on this, and you might just be folding your laundry or putting. I don’t have them done now, but sometimes I’ll put like, press on nails or I’m putting my nails on for me or whatever I’m doing for me. It’s me and my time. Time blocking with boundaries. And it’s also community support without the noise. This is encouragement. This is. You can do it. This is other moms who get it without scrolling your phone, without having to post on social, without getting distracted by your feet. Okay, this is moms who understand the chaos, the interruptions, right? You feel more seen and you feel connected because again, especially maybe your summer is different.
Cara Harvey 00:18:27 Maybe during the school year you’re at a job, you’re interacting with more people, and at home you’re like with your kids the whole time. You just want to talk to other people. You just want to hang out. It’s so powerful. It will help you build your momentum, build your confidence. You will leave with something done and not just planned. Now, this is a hiccup that a lot of my members hit. They learn the method. They love the planning method. Then they get stuck in procrastinating. So they’re planning and they’re planning and they’re planning and they’re not implementing. This is implementation. And then it gives you momentum which is going to lead to motivation. Right. It’s not the other way around. It’s not like, oh, I’m going to be so motivated and I’m going to get stuff done. It’s I start to move into action and then I get things done. Yesterday we finished up our are our together. I got a bunch done, but I wasn’t completed with the task I had.
Cara Harvey 00:19:10 So I said to the club members, I’m committing. Like I’m like, we’re gonna get off because it’s top of the hour or whatever, but I’m committing to not leave this chair until this task is done. I’m going to do two more 15 minute sessions. I was motivated because I had the momentum going. The thing that I love about these co-working sessions, too, that we’ve added to the club, and just in general, if you do them, they’re flexible and they’re low pressure. You don’t need childcare. You could literally do it, you know, while your kids playing, you could have your kid playing in the other room and have your laptop there or your phone. Like I said, the one member, Joan, she had me on her phone as she’s driving around, you don’t need to have your camera on. You don’t even have to talk. You literally could just get things done with accountability. You get to work on what you want to work on. Not everyone’s working on this, your goals, but you’re not doing it by yourself.
Cara Harvey 00:19:55 No one is judging your to do list or your results if you’re listening on the podcast. I also don’t know how good my mic is, but that thunder, just thunder right now is so loud. I was like oh my God. So let’s hopefully be able to get through this episode before if we don’t use.
Cara Harvey 00:20:08 Any power internet.
Cara Harvey 00:20:09 But this is the other reason. Being home is so key for us is that we need to be flexible, right? Coworking does this for you. All right. So I do want to invite you though, to hang out with us at the purpose of your mom club with our new summer pass. The summer pass is actually only $10 where you get to attend one call. Now you can get three calls for 25 or 1 call for ten. And you can attend a coworking. You can attend an accountability call, or you can attend what we call Soar, which is where I’ll teach on a specific topic, like a live podcast recording exactly like this. But I have slides and things like that.
Cara Harvey 00:20:46 And then I do that for like 15, 20 minutes and then I then I coach. So if you want to look, you can see my topics. If you go to a purpose driven mom or a purpose driven mom, both of those will show you. But the club pass. I’ll show you my topics for the next couple of weeks. You can use your club pass all summer, test us out $10. No commitment, No reoccurring payments. Maybe you just need the support. Maybe you just need the accountability. I want to encourage you to go to a purpose driven romcom club and come join us. Swipe up in your show notes. Go to a purpose driven romcom podcast. I think it’s 466 this week and hang out with us. It’s a great way to also test out the purpose of your mom club and see if it’s for you. And listen, if you’re feeling behind, unfocused or alone, we get it. And we’re here. Co-working is probably the support that you didn’t realize you were missing.
Cara Harvey 00:21:33 It’s not about hustling harder. It’s about structure and support. I mean, you can do it alone, but. But you don’t have to go to a purpose driven mom club. Pass. Learn about our club pass. Come and join us for one call. Come join us for all the calls. And if you want to upgrade at any point to a Purpose Driven Mom Club membership because it’s $79 a month at the moment I’m recording, this purpose for club membership gets you all the calls. So again, you could show up five times a week if you wanted to. It also gets you to our Sunday planning, our monthly planning, our Facebook group, our book club, and the entire Soar curriculum. So obviously it’s a better deal. But we know sometimes people want to try before they buy. So if you want to upgrade, you can take your upgrade up to one full month and come join us. Use that $10 you spend on your club pass. Get it off for your first month of a club membership.
Cara Harvey 00:22:18 So go to a purpose driven romcom club, hang out with us, get in some co-working I want to hold your hand through and be your support system. I’m excited to hang out. Thanks so much for listening to this episode of the Purpose Driven Mom Show. If this episode served you in any way, we would really appreciate it if you headed over to wherever you listen to podcast. Hit that five star and leave a review and a rating. That’s how more moms can find us and we can grow our community. If you had a tip or an Make sure you come over and tag me at a Purpose Driven Mom on Instagram and share it with your friends.
