Cara walks through what mental overload actually looks like in everyday life, from juggling multiple unfinished tasks to constantly anticipating needs and making endless decisions. She explains how this invisible load can lead to procrastination, exhaustion, and that frustrating feeling of being busy all day without getting anything done, helping you recognize that the issue isn’t discipline, it’s capacity.
You’ll also hear simple and practical strategies to start reducing that mental load, including brain dumping, prioritizing tasks, and using structured systems to organize your thoughts. By getting everything out of your head and focusing on just a few key priorities, it becomes easier to take action without feeling overwhelmed or stuck.
This episode wraps with a powerful reminder to let go of perfection and focus on progress. Through small shifts like using short focused work sessions, creating simple routines, and lowering unrealistic expectations, you can build momentum and create more ease in your day while still moving forward in a meaningful way.

episode 505 and I have a special bonus episode for you today and it’s gonna be great. In today’s episode we’ve got a roundup of members from On Purpose U, my brand new program that we have been building this whole first quarter of the year. On Purpose U is all about the study of you. What do you want? What do you need? What matters to you? And for so many of us moms, especially us who get up in this midlife area and you’re like I don’t know what I want anymore, On Purpose U is gonna help you solve that.
If you’ve ever went to plan your goals out and been like, don’t even know what my goals are. I don’t know what I wanna work on. I need to rediscover me. On Purpose U is the membership for you. In these videos, we have three distinct schools, clarity, alignment, and momentum. Inside each of the schools, you can choose which videos make the most sense for your life, and I’m gonna teach you how to figure it out. got quizzes and fun tools and things like that. It’s gonna help you actually set goals that matter the most to you. On Purpose U is a unique membership experience.
where you get to be a part of it because what I’m actually gonna be doing soon is sending out a survey to our current members to ask which pieces they want to build next. It is going to be fun and we want you to be a part of it. So in today’s episode, I’ve rounded up some of our On Purpose U members and they sat and talked to me about their experience, about what they thought about the program, why they joined and the success they had. I hope you enjoy and if you have any questions, go to apurpose-driven-mom.com slash onpurposeu and learn more.
All right, Ellen, welcome and thank you for sharing your experience with On Purpose U. I’m so excited to just pick your brain and hear a little bit about your experience with the program. Let’s start with why you decided to become one of our founding members of On Purpose U. Okay, well, I’m sure the obvious answer that everybody’s probably given you is, love you and we want to support you. So hands down, that alone was like, let me check this out. But the more I looked at it, I was like, I’ve enjoyed being in the club. I love.
knowing that I can go in there every month, even if I miss the call, I can watch the replay, all the things. And I know the process, but something still felt like it was missing for me. And I couldn’t put my finger on what it was until I got into On Purpose You. 100 % made me realize that I was missing that clarity piece. There was just this disconnect where I wanted to like do all the things, but I didn’t have like a filter to make it work for me. So that was a big thing for me, like huge light bulb moment, definitely.
Cara Harvey (03:07.534)
clicked once I was actually in there. So I’m glad that my love for you and everything that you teach was enough support to get me over the hurdle and into on purpose you. Well, that’s one of the big things that I know you said it like I feel like the first week we got into that school of clarity, you said it and so many other people said it was they didn’t realize they were missing clarity. I’m curious for you like now, now, I’ve shared this before when I’ve done these, but like the founding members just for like context.
had to sprint through the program. So they didn’t get to stop and pause and reflect as much as they probably would have liked to. But I’m curious now that once you have that light bulb, I’m missing clarity, what other impacts it’s had on just you deciding anything for planning or your to-do list or your tasks. How has that played out for you in the past month or so of, wait, I realize I’m missing clarity? There are a couple different little nuances that I’ve definitely picked up on. A big one is realizing that
Clarity has allowed me to recognize my capacity on such a deeper level that I just kind of completely ignored and buzzed right through. So even though I knew and understood time blocking and all the things, I would still try and cram so much in there because I wanted to do all the things. And I don’t think I had the clarity on what my values truly were. Like I had some level of self-awareness and, you know, common things that I was doing. I don’t want to say wrong, but common hangups, red flag moments like my…
perfectionism leading to procrastination. I was aware of that. And it wasn’t just an issue of like me putting too much on my plate, but it was not putting enough of the right things and only the right things on my plate that was really causing this conflict for me internally. I couldn’t understand why because I was like, but I broke it all down into this neat, beautiful little plan. So yeah, that’s, that’s huge.
for me and I wish that we could have gone a little slower. It was like drinking from a fire hose, but I am so excited to unpack and go through it on a much better pace for myself because even going through, I basically had to hit pause on going through the workbooks, which are so nitty gritty and I love them. But I could see the value because even as I’m watching, I’m thinking through in my head, my gosh, that question, there is so much to unpack right there. And I can’t wait to like sit and journal and do all the things.
Cara Harvey (05:18.826)
as taking as much time as I need to go through it. And I think that’s one of the beautiful things that you created with On Purpose You is that pathway, ability to focus on one school at a time or jump and skip a school to fit where you are in your season, where you are in your life, and what you need right now. And I’m just really excited to slow down and really take my time going through clarity, because I’ve gotten just like the tip of the iceberg there. Let’s talk about that slowing down piece, because I’ve had this conversation with a few other people of like,
The especially in the school of clarity, I feel like a lot of people have those light bulbs of like, want to sit with this. And so many of our natural personalities are not let me sit with this. They’re let me fix this so I can do something productive, we say in quotes, so I can fix this and move on. I’m curious what advice you’re giving yourself or anybody else who would like really diving in, whether they start in clarity, wind up back in clarity, whatever school they go to of.
really allowing this to be a program that is set your own pace? Because we talked about this a lot with the founding members of we know we like a good checkbox. We know we want to finish it all. We know we want to speed through. But can we really nail in that this is your pace and it’s OK to slow down? Maybe you give yourself a pep talk here. I’m like, it’s OK to go back and take your time and why you think that’s needed. Well, so I think it’s twofold for me. I’m just realizing how nitty gritty and kind of like a therapy session.
Core curriculum plus school therapy really was, especially when we talked about defining our definition of success. That unpacked a lot for me because I really have been living in this world of me thinking in my brain, I’m in my teens, in my 20s still. No, no, no, no, no, no. We’re not going to talk about the fact that I’m turning 42 this month. I still feel that way. I still think that way on so many levels, but that’s not real. That’s not realistic for me anymore. And so understanding where all that came from was so juicy.
But then working through on purpose view and realizing my capacity, I’ve realized that I had to just tell myself and I’m to be continually reminding myself, I’m setting a goal this year of only focusing on one thing per quarter. Like I’m not going to go try and keep up with the monthly rotation of anything. I’m going to slow down really dig deep because even just that month of us going through it, clarity is the one that I like the core curriculum and clarity are the two that I actually got to work through the most. And I still feel like.
Cara Harvey (07:33.198)
there’s so much more I can do in there. And so that’s giving me this huge push to actually honor myself and slow down like I need to because the shifts that made for me in setting up this upcoming quarter for myself is huge. Like I could look at this quarter last year and see how much was on my Trello board compared to what I have for this year. And it’s so much smaller, so much more realistic and it feels so much lighter. Yeah. Well, I think
This was a big aha I had for myself. You know, I shared like as filming that capacity piece. Like I didn’t realize what a through line it was gonna be through the whole program until I started making the program. And I realized that this, this capacity is the core of this program. It’s recognizing what your capacity is in the moment and honoring it like for what it is. So I love that you had that aha of like, this is my capacity for the quarter. I don’t need to jam it all in. And this is where I’m at right now. And then that other piece you talked about about like,
the midlife shift, if we will, right? Like I do the same where I’m like, this is what I used to be able to do. This is what I used to have. And my life is so different. And so it’s been really fun working with other moms who are like in a similar season of realizing like we need this because even though the time management stuff in the club, like the bull setting break, the very practical is there from what I’m hearing from you and from other people. It’s like, if you’re missing that piece of what do I actually want, then it’s kind of.
Like you’re just, like you had said, like you’re just still trying to squeeze it in, but it doesn’t make sense. And it’s okay to recognize that piece. Yeah. And I think the funnest part of going through that exercise, that definition of success was realizing how much of my childhood was rooted in competition and me needing like that first place, that second place, that kind of like pat on the back moment. As moms, we don’t get that.
all. There is no pat on the back. There is no award for motherhood. So anything relating to my kids and keeping up with the house and things like that where there is no external. Yeah, exactly. That explains so much about why I’ve been struggling in certain areas all this time because I’ve been waiting for that moment of, yay, congrats, you got first place, which I’m slowly starting to realize it’s the benefit of me doing Taekwondo now because I’m at least filling that on some level versus none at all.
Cara Harvey (09:46.338)
But that was really, really fun to unpack. It’s going to be interesting to see how that plays out over the next year, realizing that and finding ways to basically gamify my own life for my own self to actually acknowledge the fact that that’s what I really need to not necessarily build that motivation per se, but to get that momentum and keep that momentum going. Yeah. And I just love what you said just now because that was the goal of On Purpose You. It is the study of what you need. And when you can recognize
I need these things. I realize I’m stuck in this pattern. This is why I’m doing these things. You can kind of step back and say, well, now how do I make a plan for me? And so many of us put us as mom on the back burner and you’re like, I don’t know, I’ll figure it out, but I gotta get these things done. And I feel like what on purpose you is gonna help moms do is back up a step and say, what do I want? And how can I fit that into my life? Not what I feel like I need, not what’s prescribed to me. Not even what I realized to you.
My brain thinks it needs right now because I’m still attached to old me, but like what does real like me right now need? And I think that’s fun. So thank you for being a member, a founding member. Thank you for the thought. You know, I said this to all of you, but like you all really helped shape this program, helped create it, cause it wasn’t what I planned. And I’m so happy with like the quote unquote final product and what’s to come. So thank you so much for just being a part of it and your time.
You’re welcome. It was really fun watching your like your shift. It felt like the feedback was so honest and everyone felt really on board with the goal of making this. Like it felt so supported by the community, which was really fun for me. Like I really felt like I got to have a brain space myself to just bounce ideas back and forth, which as entrepreneurs and people who work from home and have our own business, we rarely get those people in our lives where we can do it. So it was, it was a really.
fun, time consuming, but fun experience for me. So now I’m happy that we’ve got the core of it down and I can’t wait to just get the rest of it up and out there and stuff. So thank you again and thank you for hanging out today. You’re welcome. My pleasure. Welcome Sarah, thank you for sharing your experience with On Purpose You today. I’m excited especially to pick your brain as somebody who is a member of the Purpose Super Mom Club, who’s kind of been in the APDM universe for a few years now. And I know that you got a lot out of
Cara Harvey (12:01.966)
the speed round, we’re calling it, of OPY because it was so fast. What made you say, want to be a founding member of this new program? I think it was multiple things for me. One of them was probably a little bit of FOMO. Yup, that’s what I’m hearing. But also, like having been in the club for, I think we’re going on maybe five years now. I’m not sure exactly. I don’t remember exactly when I joined, but I’m having been there for so much time. Like I have the…
like understanding of how SOAR works. And yet I’m still struggling to like implement it and make it work in my life. like something I realized, I didn’t know this ahead of time, but I just, I’ll stick with what I knew ahead of time was something is missing. And I was just trying to figure out the what’s missing and the emails that you were sending out is all about like learning about yourself. And I’m like, obviously if this program is working for so many people, the something that’s missing is my understanding of me. And so just going in.
and starting to learn those things. What I realized while taking it is that the reason that I was struggling with implementing this framework in SOAR is because I didn’t have enough clarity on where to go, like what goals to even set. Like you can’t break down a goal if you don’t have a goal. Like sometimes it was, I don’t even know what goals to set. And sometimes it was like, well, I have a million ideas of goals, but I don’t know which one to work on first. And so just having that
time to go through and honestly going into the program, I thought I had already been gaining a bunch of clarity, which I’m sure I had, but I thought clarity wasn’t going to be the piece for me. I thought moving into the second phase and I’m losing it at the moment. I think the alignment and the momentum feels very practical and feels like that mindset work and a lot of us are resistant to like, well, I don’t need to work on that. But then I also
As I was recording, I found myself stopping myself. You needed to say that. Like, whatever you just said, like, go back and, learn from yourself. Because especially as we get older, this is the conversation. And I think the exciting part for me of this program is, now that I’m in my 40s, my life feels so different. And I never stopped to adjust the way that I was making goals with my life. Like, I just kept making them the same way. And now I’m like, I’m not the same person. I don’t care about the same things. I don’t need the same things. And I think that clarity piece for a lot of people helped them be like,
Cara Harvey (14:24.494)
Wait, what do I want? Yeah. Well, and see, and that’s why I thought I wasn’t gonna fall into the clarity because the last six months before going through this, I was going through a phase, like all of last year, I was going through a phase of just figuring out what it is that I want. And so I thought I was already there, but then we started going through just the speed round of clarity and I was just like, okay, I’m definitely not as clear as I thought I was. And so I might be clear on some of the like…
bigger picture things, but definitely not clear on the what I should work on first. And I was already going through a bit of a transformation ahead of time. just this last fall realized that I like self diagnosed that I have ADHD, which was like mind opening for me. And so that was part of the thing too is like
I know there’s this part of me that I didn’t fully understand. so since this is all about learning about me and that’s what I want to do right now, that’s part of why I was like, yep, I need to jump into this. And I hesitated because I was like, I’m a bookkeeper and we’re in the middle of tax season. I’m like, I don’t know if I can commit to this, but I’m like, I need it. I so need it. And so I’m really glad that I did.
I mean, no matter what I hear you teach on, always learn something. But this was just, I feel like going through it, especially once I go back and I’m able to like really dive into the homework and really deep dive and really figure those things out for myself. think going then back to SOAR again and starting and implementing those things is going to be easier because I’ll actually have that understanding of myself and what works for me a little better and what I actually need to use the SOAR method for.
Yeah, well that’s been injured in conversation I’ve been having with people who are in both programs is while they have like that caraflare like through the whole thing, they are different. And I’m wondering how you see them working together like for you. You said, yeah, I’m going to go through them to get more clarity and be able to implement. This is how you take a goal and break it down and make it and you know, this is how you time block and all of the things to like fit your goals into your schedule.
Cara Harvey (16:30.178)
But the on purpose you is very much like, how do I determine what those goals are that I even want to put into my schedule? How do I know what’s important to me? Instead of just, you know, as a mom, it’s easy to be all about what are all my family’s needs? And that, and this is really focused on what is it that I need and what do I want to work on? And just really getting clear on that. Because if you’re not clear on that, that’s at least for me, if I’m, I’m totally.
have not been clear on that, obviously. so like, for me, prioritization has been a huge struggle because I can sit down and go, okay, here’s what my week looks like. But everything that I would like to work on is way more than the time that I have. And so how do I even decide where to start? And so then I just don’t. And so just going through this and starting to see, I’m already seeing things. Like there’s a program that we’re looking to assign our…
home setup for and there’s a second avenue to it where there’s another option but it looks like it would probably be more time commitment so I’m like I’m already seeing myself going wait a minute I’m already at capacity I don’t think I should go that route. I swear that is like you know we have like some catchphrases in the Purpose of Her Mom Club like it was funny too because my husband loves Saturday Night Live and he’s been watching all the old episodes of Saturday Night Live like whenever he and the other day he pulled me in because I guess there was a character who said something about shoulding
And he was like, look, it’s like you. you know, like in the club, we say things like stop shooting on ourselves. I feel like I am at capacity is the OPY catchphrase. I agree. I love it. I’m like, this is just like, and for some reason for me, no feels hard. I think for a lot of us, right? No feels hard, but like I am at capacity. I feel like settled with that. Like it feels like the most settled no in my life that I’m like, I’m just at capacity. I don’t have to over explain it. I don’t have to do it. Like it is what it is. So I love that. All right. go ahead. I was going to say, if I say so say.
just no to someone, I feel like I still owe them an explanation of why I said no. But if you say, I’m just at capacity right now, that is the explanation. My life is just too full for adding. Yeah, nobody can argue that. No one can argue it. And again, while we don’t need the permission to, we don’t have to explain, let’s be real, many of us feel what we do. Makes us feel better. Yeah, so that phrase, it feels like this permission to just be settled. And I think…
Cara Harvey (18:52.084)
One of the other like hidden gems of the program I’m realizing is how much it helps people grow in their confidence as they learn about themselves. It’s like, I’m learning about myself. I’m learning about my needs. So I feel like I can say I’m at capacity and feel good about it. And I feel like I don’t have to justify things and I can really just be confident that I am going to be able to do it. Did you, did you feel that like, like vibe as you were going through stuff? Yes, definitely. Because I think
Unconfidence comes from that uncertainty of not knowing, you know, which way to go. You know which way to go. And so as you’re figuring out which way you want to go with your life and the things that you’re wanting to do in your life, it definitely builds more confidence. And so it’s already doing that for me. And I look forward to do the deep work. Yeah.
Definitely. I’m just listening to them already, like light bulb moment, light bulb moment. that makes sense. Even if you’re not doing the deep dive and doing the work, you still get something out of it. And I’m just looking back. I just know that I need to get more out of it. And I will when I go back and I sit down and actually, you know, work through the workbooks or even just listening to them again, because going through and listening to the whole program, once we got to momentum for me,
It didn’t hit as hard, I think it’s because I need the clarity and the alignment first. The stuff in momentum was so good, but it just wasn’t ready for it. But there were still some things in momentum that was like, yeah, that helps. And I think even knowing those things will help when I go back into the clarity and alignment portion as well.
And so then by the time I get back to momentum again, I fully expect it to feel more like a lot more aha moments and oh, I can actually do this now because I’ve done the work elsewhere. Yeah. And that’s the point. It’s like, what do you need right now? And when you’re ready for it, it’s there. So Sarah, thank you for your time and being a part of the program and just taking this fast track into this program. Because like we said, like, I didn’t know what we were doing at first. And we just literally built the plane as we flew it.
Cara Harvey (20:55.892)
and it’s turned into this new program that I think is gonna really impact other people. So Sarah, thank you for your time. Yeah, thank you for interviewing me. Welcome Vicki here on the Purpose to Her Mom podcast and thank you for sharing your experience with On Purpose You. Vicki is a founding member of the program and we’re just chatting today about why she joined the program, what she got out of the program and as a member of the Purpose to Her Mom club as well, kind of how it all works together.
Vicki, were just talking before we kind of kicked off about what drew you to On Purpose U. Okay. The initial thing was, of course, Sarah has a new program, so I’m going to purchase it. But the way the messaging was just really spoke to me at a time that like I didn’t realize I needed something different or more. But as I listened to the episodes, it was the lessons, I guess, I was like, yeah.
You needed this. is like the still care of teaching, but it’s somehow I’m hearing it or she’s saying it in a different way that I needed to hear at this time. And pretty sure I listened to all of them. might have some of the welcome ones to still listen to, but I cannot wait to sit down and make a plan. I did the quiz like last week and I need to start with the school of alignment, but like I felt like in every school,
I need this right now. I need this right now. I mean, it was just, it was just a really, a lot of light bulb moments for me. My quiz said to go to alignment. So that’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to make a plan to, you know, we’ll think in the orientation or the one like the very first like syllabus. I did like do all the journal prompts, but then when the other schools came in and there were so many videos and
I didn’t get a chance to do all the journal with it because we didn’t have time because we needed, you needed the feedback. So we, you know, was kind of like speed up, but honestly, I think that this may be a good way to kind of go through it to like.
Cara Harvey (23:02.742)
Yeah, well, can I ask you about that because so Vicky as a member of the founding class for anybody doesn’t know they kind of had to do it on speed like they had the most Accelerated version of this program one school was launched a week and they had to go through it But one of the things about OPY that’s I think a little different than other programs that I’ve ever made or done is that I don’t want you to do it sequentially if you don’t need to do it sequentially and I wondered how people would feel about that because I’m like a like a box checker
Like, love a good, like, let me finish it. But what Vicki’s saying is there’s a quiz and it told her to kind of, kind of quote, skip that first school because that’s not what she needed at the time. What do you think about this type of framework? And I will say right now we don’t have all the majors and everything there, but knowing that there’s going to be so much information that you can cherry pick, how does that make you feel? Like, how do what do you think? I think I have mixed feelings because I am a rule follower and I need the list to go down and.
do this, then this, then this, and get all my little check marks and say I’m 100 % complete, all those things. But I also like that it’s my choice and I can choose. Okay, if that’s how I choose to go through it, then fine. But I can maybe listen to what you’re saying and not do that. go do the quiz, see where it tells you to go.
And then, you know, I like how you made at the end of each school. Okay. Take the quiz again and see where you’re at. And maybe you do want to go dive in deeper and see what’s available at this point in the majors and minors and electives. But I do like that. So that kind of gave, it’s like it gave me permission to not do it in order, even though I know I don’t need your permission, but it’s.
I always give it. What do I say, right? It’s like permission granted, not that you need it. And I think this is hard for a lot of people because many of us are like, just solve my problem. But I think what on purpose you helps solve is you becoming empowered with figuring out how to personalize what you need. I’m wondering, I know it’s again, been super fast and accelerated, but I’m wondering like some of the light bulbs you have had going through the program so far.
Cara Harvey (25:23.45)
Today I listened to the one where you talk in momentum about self-sabotage and I’m like, Yeah, she’s talking right to me. Yeah and there were many times in the lessons and what I do like about the member vault like we can put our messages in there like our little notes and they save and like if I think it tells you the date like if you go back later, but on one of them
I put the date in there just for my own, just because it’s, I think of when I took the quiz, I went in there and I said, okay, you know, this is where I’m supposed to go. This is what my scores were. And this is the date. that, because I imagine that I will go to that again at another point, you know, I think like, so right now I think I’m most excited about starting in the school of alignment.
Even though I’ve already listened to the lessons, but now implementing the workbook along with the lessons, I think it’s going to be like a big key. I don’t know how many of the videos that I typed in, my God, you are talking right to me. Like I felt like we were on like a one-on-one class and you were just like, okay, Vicki, I know what you’re going through. This is what the problem is. This is how you can fix it.
I don’t know. guess I didn’t maybe expect that many aha moments in the program because the program I think is so different than what you initially envisioned. It is not at all what I planned. And I think that’s the thing too with doing a founding members launch. I’m so glad I did because if I didn’t, this would not be the program that I would have put out. And it was getting on with everybody, hearing what they liked being like, getting the ideas.
and seeing what people needed. And I think that’s the thing that’s been interesting for me making a new program. It’s been so long since I’ve made a new program is thinking what do people need? And I’ve shared this a couple times with the founding members, like also like I’m, you know, in my forties now, my life is very different. Like I found so much of it was also like I was talking to myself. I was like, what do I need right now? And I think that’s really important just for business owners in general, like evolving with your people.
Cara Harvey (27:44.054)
Now, Vicki, you’ve been a member of the Purpose River Mom Club for a couple years too. So these are two different programs. I’m wondering how you see them playing together for you and supporting you in your goals. So like I’ve been through the SOAR program probably four or five times in the like five years or so that I’ve been in the club. I always get something new out of it. And it’s just because I’m at a different place in my life when I’m going through it. And I have like, I maybe have figured out.
some things and now I’m like growing and moving on to like the next thing or maybe I’ve had a setback like now I’m recovering from surgery. So I am super limited on what I can do. And so it has really, I feel like it’s came at a good time for me because it’s that came at a time when I’ve kind of had time to stop and actually think about it different because when you’re sitting there and you can’t walk because
it’s your foot that you surgery on. mean, you, kind of, you have to just sit there. And so it’s given me a, like a pause and I feel like it’s like new energy and my goals and my plans. It’s hard for me to separate like, okay, what if I only had OPY and didn’t have the club because I do have both. But for somebody who is maybe like just
getting to the point of, maybe I need like maybe some outside help. And you can go to the OPY and get so much out of it. But then if you feel like you’re doing all that, but you still maybe need some more help, I feel like that’s how the club just kind of marries right in because that’s where the coaching is. And so,
And it’s not like you created like this whole program that doesn’t relate to what you’ve already been teaching. I mean, it’s all things that you’ve already been teaching. I just feel like a lot of it is just you’ve gone a lot deeper into things than you maybe have in the club. Yeah. And that was the thing we talked about on the question was like how OPY is like the why behind stuff and it really like OPY on purpose you it’s the study of you like the whole point of it is to really like what do I need in this moment? And we realized so much of it is like that theory of
Cara Harvey (30:05.9)
Just rediscovering I feel like what you want need and and where you’re at in your life I feel like that’s really what’s happening with on purpose you and now the club is the the how It’s the like let’s let me hold you accountable. Let me help you actually do it So it’s like OPY feels like discovering what it is that you actually want and that was the thing yesterday we talked about of a lot of people be like I need to make goals. But where there’s a sticking point is I don’t know what my goals should be or I don’t know what goals I want
And the Purpose of Your Mom Club helps you break those goals down, put them in your time blocks, like figure out the practical, the nitty gritty. Whereas we’re realizing is that OPY is coming in in that pre-step of like, let me help you figure out you and reconnect with you, which was such an unintended journey that we went on. And so I think that they do both go kind of hand in hand. So to close, if somebody was thinking about joining on Purpose U and they were unsure, what would you tell them? I would tell them that.
They need to do it. mean, the price point I feel like is reasonable that somebody could do it. And it doesn’t have to be a long-term commitment. You can do it for as long as you need it. And then you can decide from there. I mean, I think based on the price point, it’s just a no-brainer. You just need to try it and see. I think
that you will be very surprised by what you find inside. Thank you so much, Vicki, for just your time and all the work we’ve done together over past few years. It has been a pleasure watching you grow. And now I’m so excited to see what happens next once you dive more into that discovery of you. So thanks, Vicki. Thanks, Kara.
All right. Welcome Kristen to the Purpose of Your Mom show. And thanks for hanging out with me this morning and telling me about your experience in On Purpose U. Before we jump in, I’ll always love to give a little context to people on who we’re talking to. So if you just want to tell us a little bit about yourself. Hi, I am Kristen Natsunama-Kun. I have two beautiful children, a three-year-old and a six-year-old, a husband.
Cara Harvey (32:15.022)
who is working outside of the home half the week and his job just went a little bit crazy. So On Purpose U was good timing for me. I’m also a homeschool mom and work from home mom. Yeah, I feel like you check all my auxiliary boxes of a lot of the people I work with. We have the homeschool feed, we have the work from home. It checks all those sides. So when you jumped into On Purpose U, I was like, perfect, I think this is really gonna help. We’re talking today a little bit about On Purpose U, so I’d love to know when we decided to open up for founding members.
What had you saying like, all right, I’m gonna give this a try? Well, it took me about three seconds to decide that I was going to join because every single program that you do helps me in one way or another. So literally, if you start a program and you say, hey, this is gonna help you with the dog walking business. I’ll say, great, I guess I need a dog walking business because you have such a great way of teaching and training and connecting that I just feel like anything you do is gonna help me. Thank you.
love that. So tell me a little bit about your experience inside On Purpose to you because, know, I jokingly said this on like every founding member call, but what we ended up with was not what we planned. It was not the start. Like it was one of those where I was like, let’s develop it as we go.
And I saw a lot of like aha moments for people. So I’m wondering for you, like what was one of those like aha, like light bulb moments that you were like, ooh, this is good. Like I needed to hear this. Well, honestly, throughout the entire thing, like I started with the core curriculum and I’m like, wow, I’m connecting, I’m connecting, I’m connecting. And then we get to the clarity, school of clarity. And honestly, I realized I’m like, I need to spend like a month here. One of the things you asked,
there was whatever question. can’t remember the specific question, but it literally brought me back to, wow, when I was in elementary school, like this happened. And I’ve always thought about that as like, it’s something that impacted my life way back when. I’m 41. I should not still be thinking about something that happened when I was in elementary school, but I was. And then the question that you asked in the workbook, it made me realize,
Cara Harvey (34:23.266)
that’s why I’m thinking about it because it did affect me. did change my way of thinking and I need to get past that change. I need to rework my thinking. So I know the school of clarity is where I need to do a lot of work so that I can move on and have a more effective experience more like I’m part of the purpose-driven mom club, but so many of the things in there, I have trouble actually.
pursuing, taking action. And I think it’s because there’s some clarity stuff. There’s stuff that within me that I need to make those connections. I need to make those changes. I have to fix things in order to be able to do the work that I need. We heard this a lot. in the people I talked to, and specifically the program, so many of them came in with very similar thoughts of like, I didn’t feel like clarity was what I needed. And as soon as I got in, it was that, like, this is it. And then the other piece of club members saying,
I didn’t realize this was the piece that was missing for me. We’d sit down and be like, you need to work on goals. And it’s like, I’m not sure what to do. And one of the things we heard, and I’d love to hear if you had kind of a similar experience, was it helped kind of put the pieces together of what was missing in order to be able to take action. Well, honestly, there’s a lot of it. It’s just like, every time I opened up one of the schools, I was like, wait, how did Kara record all of this?
How am I possibly going to listen to all of it? You have so much stuff in there currently in a spot where I’m just, I need to do a lot of the work. I need to do a lot of the learning before I can even work on the goals because my husband’s job is in flux right now. So there are so many changes going on in our lives that I know I need to do the work on me so that I can more effectively do those goals. And it’s not just.
well, things are changing. No, things are changing, but I’m not actually moving with them. So I need to do the work to get there. Yeah. And that’s the one thing that I hope from the program was that it would be this giving moms a space to like work on you and like, really, it’s on purpose you for a reason. It’s like, what are the things that you actually need right now in this season? Now, one of the unique things about the program, though,
Cara Harvey (36:34.816)
that I don’t think people are gonna love, but they’re gonna have to get on board with is that I don’t need you to do it in order and I don’t need you to do every video. It’s what you need. But I think that by being able to choose what you need, and I said this in one of the momentum videos, well, kind of like you get here and you might need to go back now that you know more, right? Or you might get to this section and say, hey, I just realized that I’m still struggling here and I have to go back. How would you talk to a perfectionist?
who was like, I must check all the boxes because I know you’re all thinking it, right? That was the feeling. It was like, but I need to and I want to. And one of things I always say as a life coach is my job is to empower you while you’re creating the belief to empower yourself. And I would love for people to like feel empowered to choose, but I know that’s not always easy. So what would you say to somebody who’s like, well, you’re gonna let me choose what to do first? Like, listen, you can go in order, but the fact that it is one of these cyclical programs is a little bit different.
Well, I honestly can say that I was going straight through from the beginning, all of the core curriculum, all of the School of Clarity. But then I was just trying to get through it so that I would be able to share what I learned in it. And at that point I realized, okay, let me just pick ones where the title is appealing because the title, every single title that you give, it’s completely clear what.
the topic is going to be. It’s not like you’re saying, hey, let me come up with some snappy title. No, it’s something that really is the truth of what I’m going to be learning in the video. So I was able to then go into the other schools and pick ones and they still made an impact even without watching every single video. And I think that that’s the big thing that yes, I could watch a video on procrastination and then another video on procrastination, then another video on procrastination and they are not in order.
but they still work together. I could watch a video on procrastination, then I could watch a video on something else, and they still work together even if they’re not in order. And each thing, it’s what you need to do for yourself. If you don’t procrastinate, ignore those videos. Like, literally, you don’t need them. But I’m a procrastinator, I need those. So I’m going to watch those, I’m going to listen to those.
Cara Harvey (38:48.034)
And the podcast, I am so happy that the podcast feed is ready. Yes, I know. I was working on that. Like, I wanted it out before we officially came out, because I was like, just to be able to listen and relisten and take them on the go, I think is helpful. And because this is such an ecosystem is the way I’m like really looking at it. Like it really all does feed into itself. And that was the one thing I was concerned about. So I’m glad you said that. I was like, if I don’t watch all the videos though, will things still be relevant and make sense and flow? So I’m like, thank you. Yes. Because that was one of, that’s a struggle when you’re like allowing people to choose.
what they need, which is important and what I want the program to be. It’s about you, but also you want it to make sense and not be so sequential that if you miss a video, you miss something. So it sounds like we’re there, which I’m like, yeah, that’s so exciting because I feel like you probably, honestly, I feel like you probably need to watch the first video first in each school because you have so much of the information, so much of the introduction there. But aside from that, no, because you literally are picking and choosing what topic you need.
If you don’t need a topic, you don’t need a topic. But that introduction, yes, you need that. Everything else, choose what you need. I love how you did it. You really did make it that you provide all the information you need in each actual video so that like, if you’re talking about something, it’s not that you’re necessarily referencing another video and you have to watch this video in order to get what I’m talking about. You might say, hey, if you want more information on this, you should watch that other video.
But I’m giving you enough information here that if you don’t need more information, you’re good. Yay, that, yes, that feels so good, because that was my hope and my goal with it. And that was the thing that I’m excited to dive into. I’m putting a pause on it now, but like getting into the majors and the minors and everything, because I feel like every video I did, I had to hold myself back because I was like, I want to give more. But I was like, that’s not the intent of the 101, right? The 101 is the intent. And then it’s like, hey, I think I want more. Hey, I think I could use more. Like, I want to go in deeper. So.
I’m excited to get those going and thank you for that idea also. I’m not gonna know what people need till they get in it and every single cohort of people that come in are going to need different things. So it’s gonna keep me on my toes as well. So thank you, I love this idea. So for anybody who’s watching, listening, thinking about On Purpose U but they’re not sure, what could you say to kind of like encourage them to come join us? Well, honestly, just try for a month.
Cara Harvey (41:10.914)
Yeah. Because you get everything. You can’t actually, possibly… In your mind, you cannot actually take in all of that information in one month, but it is all there. So you join for a month. You can pick and choose something from every school, every major, minor elective that is available at that time. You can pick videos to listen to and find out if it’s right for you.
And you’ll probably find out that it is just right for you because it’s all about learning about you. It’s not that it’s about Kara. It’s not that it’s about me. It’s not that it is about you. So you’ll find something that’s in there that’s relevant and you’ll want to stay longer. As moms, think thinking about taking time to focus on us feels, I don’t have time for that. Like I don’t need it. But especially like I had shared like in filming this.
You know, in my 40s, you you feel it, I’m sure that shift, something just starts to shitch in you and you’re like, I need to rediscover my wants, my needs, my thoughts again. And I feel like a lot of that came through this program. You know, we have a whole video on lifestyle shifts and like all the different things that happened because I feel like a lot of times it’s not discussed. Like now I’m in this different phase of my life. What am I doing? And you’re like, right. What am I doing? What do I want? So I, you know, I encourage moms who are like thinking, well,
This is about me and we get into that mommy martyr of like, should, if I’m gonna invest, I should invest in something that’ll help my meal planning or practical for my kids, but like this is so important. I also wanna say that your kids are older than my kids, plus you have one who just went off to college. I have a three year old, I have a six year old. This still has a huge impact on me. And if I think about it, truly, and I look at it.
This is something I would have enjoyed that not just enjoyed, but I would have devoured and I would have wanted to have in my life before I had kids. Because there is so much information, so much exploration of yourself that it doesn’t matter if you’re a mom, you’re a dad, you’re a dog mom, a dog dad, or you’re not a parent at all. Because this is more within the life coaching, not just life coaching moms. This is so much about.
Cara Harvey (43:22.548)
you as a person, has nothing to do with you as a parent specifically, unless that’s what you are and you make sure that you research your brain, you do everything you need to find out about yourself in that role. But it’s not about a specific role, it’s about you. Yeah, and it’s about you in that season. I’m excited to go through and now like watch again.
and become like a student of myself. It’s funny because sometimes I’ll listen to like my my podcast and all this stuff I say. And I’m like, dang, I needed to hear that today. And I think that’s so important to know that we’re always like, I say this in the program, but like the longest relationship you have is the one you have with yourself. And it’s so important that you take time to nurture it, which is what we do in this program. So Kristen, thank you for being such a great founding member, great feedback. This was probably my, one of my favorite founding member launches I’ve done ever because it was.
so integral to shaping a program that was literally supposed to be a resource library to every founding member. I’m always like, thank you so much. Cause I know one y’all sprinted through watching. I sprinted through recording, but you sprinted through watching like crazy and gave such instrumental feedback that will still continue to shape the program. So thank you. And thank you because honestly this program, it is going to make such a difference in my life when I’m able to take the time and not sprint through it and take the time and actually
work through it as a student using that work. So I’m super, super, super excited for this program. It’s amazing. Thank you. Thank you so much and thanks for sharing your story today. Thank you.
